Emile Zola is one of my favorite authors. He writes about human life at its best and worst. Nana is a study in stupidity, greed, evil, and the total control that one person could possibly have over another. How could this end well? Nana is a timeless classic.

As to Blanche de Sivry, whose real name was Jacqueline Bandu, she hailed from a village near Amiens. Magnificent in person, stupid and untruthful in character, she gave herself out as the granddaughter of a general and never owned to her thirty-two summers. The simple Nana is a girl from a disrupted home — her About Nana. Nana was first published in 1880 and is the ninth novel in Zola’s influential Les Rougon-Macquart cycle. It was hugely popular with readers, but also met with harsh criticism as some of its scenes were deemed immoral. Nana, the novel’s eponymous heroine, is the daughter of Gervaise Macquart, the main character of Zola’s earlier novel L’Assommoir. The first characters to appear are Fauchery and his cousin Hector de la Faloise. Later Fauchery is to write a good review of Nana's initial performance; still later he will write a condemnation of her ("The Golden Fly"); he will also become the lover to the wife of Nana's lover.
